About Wayland
map
Located to the west of Boston, Wayland was originally settled as part of the Sudbury Plantation in 1673. Although incorporated during the year 1780 it was not founded as a town until 1835.

The town was named after a woman by the name of Francis Wayland who started the first free public library in Massachusetts in the year 1848, and was also a preacher and president of Brown University.

The town attractions include the Ground Herd House as well as the Depot which is a small shop in an old train station. Wayland also includes one of the best school systems in the state of Massachusetts.

Program on Experience Wight Richardson

A LOCAL WOMAN'S VOICE FROM THE 18TH CENTURY: THE REVOLUTIONARY WRITINGS OF EXPERIENCE WIGHT RICHARDSON

We hear about men marching off to war in the 18th century to secure American independence, making momentous decisions at Town Meetings, and serving in town government. A few even attended college and entered the professions. But what about the women who made up at least half the population? What were their thoughts and actions? Fortunately, we can gain some insight through the diary of Experience Wight Richardson, who lived in colonial Sudbury (today Wayland and Sudbury) during the turbulent years that led up to the American Revolution. Jane Sciacca will share Mrs. Richardsons story in a discussion of womens lives in colonial times.

David Hackett Fischer: Wayland People in the World

Wayland resident and historian, David Hackett Fischer, will present a talk on famous Wayland residents.

Wayland people have had a long reach. They have drawn on their experience of life in this small town , to make large contributions in the world. A familiar example is Lydia Maria Child, now recognized by historians as a major figure in the Antislavery movement, and in campaigns for the rights of women, as well as in journalism, literature and publishing. Another is Archibald Cox. Many still remember his life and service in the town, and his achievements in law, politics, academe, and the national crisis of Watergate. Not so well known is Robert Patterson, a landscape designer and architect who invented new building styles in the mid- twentieth century. Thanks in large part to a new study by Will Thorndike, Patterson is beginning to be discussed as a major figure in American architecture. Dr. Fischer's talk will center on these Wayland people, and others of more recent generations.

Dr. Fischer is University Professor and Earl Warren Professor of History at Brandeis University. The recipient of many prizes and awards for his teaching and writing, he is the author of numerous books, including "Washington's Crossing," which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in history.
