About Wayland
map
Located to the west of Boston, Wayland was originally settled as part of the Sudbury Plantation in 1673. Although incorporated during the year 1780 it was not founded as a town until 1835.

The town was named after a woman by the name of Francis Wayland who started the first free public library in Massachusetts in the year 1848, and was also a preacher and president of Brown University.

The town attractions include the Ground Herd House as well as the Depot which is a small shop in an old train station. Wayland also includes one of the best school systems in the state of Massachusetts.

Getting the most out of your visit with your doctor

Good communication lies at the foundation of the patient-doctor relationship and is vitally important for good health outcomes. And yet, the ever-increasing pressure on physicians to do more in less time undercuts the quality of this communication, putting patients at risk.

In his talk, Dennis Rosen, M.D., author of Vital Conversations: Improving Communication Between Doctors and Patients, will discuss some of the reasons why this communication often founders and will offer concrete suggestions on how you can get the most out of visits with your doctors.

Dennis Rosen, M.D. is a pediatric pulmonologist at Boston Children's Hospital and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Rosen writes regularly for the medical press as well as for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and The Pacific Standard. His book, Vital Conversations: Improving Communication Between Doctors And Patients was published in 2014 by Columbia University Press. His website, dennisrosenmd.com, is devoted to improving the quality of communication within our medical system to achieve better results, lower costs, and greater satisfaction for all involved. He lives in Newton with his wife and three children.

Beer Dinner with Boston Beer Founder/Brewer Jim Koch at Post 390
Join Samuel Adams Founder and Brewer Jim Koch at Post 390 restaurant for a special beer dinner to benefit "Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream." This will be a unique opportunity to meet the American craft beer icon firsthand and experience a multicourse dinner paired with a variety of Sam Adam's beers by Post 390's executive chef Eric Brennan and his team. All profits from this dinner will benefit Brewing the American Dream. The Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program is a micro-lending and coaching program for food and beverage small businesses. Created by Jim Koch, it provides the two important things Jim couldn't get when starting Sam Adams 31 years ago: access to financing and nuts-and-bolts business advice. Since the program began in 2008, Brewing the American Dream has provided millions of dollars in microloans to hundreds of entrepreneurs nationwide, coached more than 5,000 small business owners, and helped create or retain more than 2,000 jobs. About the Boston Beer Company The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father's attic. Inspired and unafraid to challenge conventional thinking about beer, Jim brought the recipe to life in his kitchen. Pleased with the results of his work, Jim decided to sample his beer with bars in Boston in the hopes that drinkers would appreciate the complex, full-flavored beer he brewed fresh in America. That beer was aptly named Samuel Adams Boston Lager, in recognition of one of our nation's great founding fathers, a man of independent mind and spirit. Little did Jim know at the time, Samuel Adams Boston Lager would soon become a catalyst of the American craft beer revolution. Today, The Boston Beer Company brews more than 60 styles of beer. It relentlessly pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of classic beers by searching the world for the finest ingredients. For more information on Brewing the American Dream go to samadams.com/btad About Post 390 Post 390 is an urban tavern offering seasonally-inspired fare, hand-crafted cocktails, and an expansive craft beer list. Executive Chef Eric Brennanputs a contemporary twist on the traditional tavern experience by offering refined yet approachable seasonal dishes that reflect his passion for quality products and providing guests with memorable experiences. His dedication and enthusiasm for local ingredients is brought to life through the restaurants Farm to Post series, which Brennan started in 2012. Each month, Brennan and his team highlight a particular New England farm or purveyor and create weekly Farm to Post menus utilizing those just-picked products.

Internet Privacy for Library Patrons

Join Library Freedom Project founder Alison Macrina for a discussion of how you can better maintain your privacy from government snoops, corporate trackers, and the hacking industry.

In an age where much of our lives are spent online, where we share increasing amounts of personal information with software providers in exchange for services, its starting to feel like our privacy is being eradicated. Some of us are uneasy about the influence and access of huge online corporations like Google and Facebook. Others are concerned about overbroad government surveillance from the NSA and FBI. Still more of us are concerned merely by how much of our information is discoverable by hackers who might seek to exploit us. Our online privacy is being compromised, but the good news is that there are technology tools to help us fight back. Alison Macrina, a librarian and privacy rights activist, will present an online privacy toolkit that offers some basic solutions to help subvert digital spying. These tools address things like search tracking, encryption, password protection, secure deletion of temporary files, secure browsing, and online anonymity.
