About Wayland
map
Located to the west of Boston, Wayland was originally settled as part of the Sudbury Plantation in 1673. Although incorporated during the year 1780 it was not founded as a town until 1835.

The town was named after a woman by the name of Francis Wayland who started the first free public library in Massachusetts in the year 1848, and was also a preacher and president of Brown University.

The town attractions include the Ground Herd House as well as the Depot which is a small shop in an old train station. Wayland also includes one of the best school systems in the state of Massachusetts.

"Harvey"
Harvey: Pulitzer-Winning Comedy About a Man and His Giant, Invisible Rabbit

Playwright Mary Chase won a Pulitzer Prize for Harvey, her comedy about a gentle cocktail-consumer named Elwood P. Dowd, his domineering and society-loving sister Veta, the doctors at a nearby sanitarium and, of course, Elwood's best friend -- a giant, invisible rabbit named Harvey. To save her family from embarrassment, Veta tries to have Elwood committed, but things don't go exactly according to plan and Veta gets committed instead, setting off a hilarious chain of events. A long-running Broadway hit, Harvey was adapted into an Oscar-winning 1950 movie starring James Stewart -- and now you can see it onstage at Beatrice Herford's Vokes Theatre.

Personal Essay Writing Workshop

As part of our "Wayland Reads" programming, Giulietta Nardone will conduct a Personal Essay Writing workshop on March 9, 16, and 23 from 7 to 8:30 pm. The program will complement the Wayland Reads 2015 title, "The Opposite of Loneliness."

This workshop program is inspired by the wise and soul-touching words of Marina who said, "Yale is full of tiny circles we pull around ourselves." This program is one of those tiny circles that will invigorate and inspire the whole as we explore the shared human condition. During the three-week program, participants will discuss essays from "The Opposite of Loneliness" as well as selected others. Then they will jump right in and start writing essays of their own. Almost everyone can write prose that is heartfelt, insightful, and universal. Seats are limited, so registration through our event calendar will be required. Registration will be opened in February, and the registration form will be found below this event listing.

Wayland native Giulietta "Julie" Nardone has been offering creative writing programs to adults and teens since 2009. Her stories and essays have been published in Chicken Soup for The Soul, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Skirt! Magazine, MetroWest Daily News, Let Go: The Art of Spiritual Surrender, Common Ties, Uncle John's Bathroom Reader, Flashquake and broadcast on NPR.

Registration is limited to 15. Please register on event listing for March 9.
