About Wayland
map
Located to the west of Boston, Wayland was originally settled as part of the Sudbury Plantation in 1673. Although incorporated during the year 1780 it was not founded as a town until 1835.

The town was named after a woman by the name of Francis Wayland who started the first free public library in Massachusetts in the year 1848, and was also a preacher and president of Brown University.

The town attractions include the Ground Herd House as well as the Depot which is a small shop in an old train station. Wayland also includes one of the best school systems in the state of Massachusetts.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN OUR IMPROVING REAL ESTATE MARKET

Local realtor Brian Cichella will discuss the leading indicators for an improving home selling and buying market. These include more new home starts, larger inventories of previously owned homes, sold prices closer to asking, lower days on market, multiple bid situations, and stabilized mortgage rates. The presentation will also examine the reported surge of new home sales and purchase prices vs. what is real in our area market.

Artists of Place - Monet, Homer & O'Keeffe

Throughout many decades, landscapes by artists, including Claude Monet, Winslow Homer and Georgia OKeeffe, have been inspired by particular places located near their homes. The early landscapes of the French Impressionist artist, Claude Monet (1840-1926) were shimmering and colorful scenes of Paris as well as parks and leisure activities on the Seine. From 1883 until his death in 1926, his favorite scenes included grain stacks, poplar trees and water lilies located near his home in Giverney. The American artist, Winslow Homer (1836-1910), received early recognition for his portrayals of the Civil War for the magazine, Harpers Weekly. Following the Civil War, he produced light-filled scenes of such locations as the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Adirondack Mountains, Gloucester Massachusetts as well as small towns and waters in Canada, Bermuda and the U.K. From 1882 until his death in 1901, his favorite scenes included the dramatic and sometimes turbulent seascapes near his home in Prouts Neck, Maine. The early works of the American twentieth century artist, Georgia OKeeffe (1887-1986), included scenes in Canyon Texas, barns and trees of Lake George NY as well as skyscrapers and magnified flowers in New York City. Living in New Mexico from 1949 until her death in 1986, her favorite scenes included the rolling hills, sinuous rivers, shrubs, trees and bleached bones located near her homes in Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu.

Join Judy Schurgin for this series which focuses on the life and works of these innovative and influential artists. View landscapes of their favorite places, including Giverney, Prouts Neck and Abiquiu.

    "Heartbreak House"
    George Bernard Shaw's Heartbreak House

Enjoy an evening of wit, romance and unforgettable characters in George Bernard Shaw's romantic comedy Heartbreak House. Just before World War I, a weekend in the English countryside becomes a tangle of unlikely attachments and unwanted complications -- romance springs eternal but is never mutual, and the most successful relationships have the least to do with love. The house in question is that of Captain Shotover, a retired ship captain, current inventor and opinionated eccentric. In his eyes, his daughters have married badly -- one to a dim-witted plodder, one to a sharp-witted layabout. Enter into the house one Ellie Dunn. Daughter of a failed businessman and in seek of reparations, if nothing else, she decides to marry the ruthless capitalist who ruined her father. The husbands, the fathers, the wives, the daughters, the aging playboy and even a burglar all come together in "this silly house, this strangely happy house, this agonizing house, this house without foundations."
